⚡ What is the Push Time App?
There are two ways your employees can clock in and out of their shifts in PUSH. They can use a shared device at your location with the Push Time app installed, or their own phone with the Push Employee app. This article covers the first option, the Push Time app.
The Push Time app turns any iOS or Android tablet or smartphone into a time clock. Most businesses mount a tablet on site, and each employee clocks in by entering their own Clock ID. Before anyone can use the device, it needs to be registered, which links the device to your account so every clock entry is recorded in the right place.
💡 | Tip: Want employees to clock in from their own phones instead? Check out our Setting Up & Managing Mobile Time and Attendance article.
🔎 Why Use the Push Time App?
Here are some common reasons teams use the Push Time app:
- Keeping clock-ins on site: Employees clock in and out on a device at your location, rather than from wherever they happen to be.
- Sharing one device across your team: A single registered device can serve everyone on shift, with each employee identified by their own Clock ID.
- Controlling who clocks in where: Limit which Positions can clock in on each device, such as a front-counter tablet for Cashiers and a kitchen tablet for Cooks.
- Tracking breaks as they happen: Employees can break in and out during their shift, which is only available on the Push Time app.
- Confirming who is clocking in: Clock photos and facial recognition add a layer of protection against one employee clocking in for another.
🔐 Access required
The Push Time app is part of our Time Tracking feature and is available on both the Signature and Supreme plans.
Note that facial recognition for photo capturing is exclusive to the Supreme plan.
Who can register devices and manage Position access?
- Super Administrators: Full access to register and unregister devices, and choose which Positions can clock in/out on each device.
- Team Administrators: Can register and unregister devices and choose which Positions can clock in/out on each device when the Setup Clock Settings permission is enabled. If you are unable to access, please confirm your permissions with a Super Administrator.
Who can clock in on the Push Time app?
- Active Employees: Can clock in and out on any registered device, as long as they have an active Position and a Clock ID, and their Position is enabled for that device.

Downloading the Push Time App
Before a device can be registered, the Push Time app must be installed on it. This is the device your employees will use to clock in and out. We recommend using an iOS or Android tablet, and most businesses use a tablet mounted on site.
Installing the app is the first step in setting up Push Time. Once it's installed on the device, you can register it to your account.
Once you have your device ready, download the Push Time app for free from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
💡 | Tip: Not sure which device to use? Before purchasing a new tablet, check the compatibility requirements on the Push Time app's page in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Older devices that can't run a recent version of the operating system may not be able to download or run the app.
Registering a Device with the Push Time app
Registering a device connects it to your account. Until a device is registered, clock-in attempts on it won't be recognized, even for employees with an active Position and Clock ID.
There are two ways to register a device, and both give the same result. This section will guide you through the following:
⚠️ | Important: A device can only be registered to one PUSH account at a time. If you register a device that's already registered to another account, it will automatically be unregistered from that account, and employees there will no longer be able to clock in/out on it. |
Registering from the Push Time App
Registering from the Push Time app is the quickest option. When you log in with your administrator details, PUSH recognizes which account(s)you belong to and allows you to connect in a few clicks!
- On the device, open the Push Time app.
- Tap the Push logo.
- Tap Register Device.
- Enter the Email and Password for your Push administrator account, then tap Login. This must be a Super Administrator, or a Team Administrator with the Setup Clock Settings permission.
- Under Company Select, you'll see every company associated with your login. Tap the company you'd like to register the device to, then tap Select.
- Under Device Name, enter a name that reflects where the device is located or what it's used for, such as Back Office, then tap Select.
📌 | Note: This is optional. If left blank, the name defaults to iPad or Tablet. - On the confirmation page, review the company and device name, then tap Confirm Device Registration.
- Once confirmed, a success message will appear and the app will return to the keypad, and your staff can start clocking in and out!
Registering from Clock Settings
If you'd rather not log in on the device itself, you can register it manually from the web app instead. Every device with the Push Time app has its own unique Device ID. Entering that ID in Clock Settings. This is helpful when the device is at a location you're not at, as long as someone there can share the Device ID with you.
- On the device, open the Push Time app and tap the Push logo.
- In the pop-up, note the Device ID.
- On a desktop, log in to your PUSH account.
- Click the Company name in the top right-hand corner.
💡 | Tip: You can also reach Clock Settings from the Employees tab by clicking Clock Approvals, then Clock Settings. - In the drop-down menu, click Company Setup.
- From the left-hand navigation bar, select Clock Settings.
- Scroll down to the Tablet Device section.
- Under Device ID, click the box and enter the Device ID from the Push Time app.
- Under Device Name, enter a name that reflects where the device is located or what it's used for, such as Back Office.
📌 | Note: This is optional. If left blank, the name defaults to iPad or Tablet. - Once done, click Update Clock Settings, and the device will appear in your list of registered devices!
Filtering Which Positions Can Access the Push Time App
By default, every Position in your account can clock in on a registered device, including any new Positions you add later. If you'd like more control, you can limit which Positions are allowed to clock in on each device. For example, a front-counter device might allow only Cashier and Server Positions, while a kitchen device might allow only Cook and Dishwasher Positions.
This is especially helpful if you have multiple devices at the same location, since each device can have its own list of Positions.
| ⚠️ | Important: Once you limit Positions on a device, new Positions are no longer added to it automatically. Because you've chosen to limit access, the system won't assume a new Position should be allowed on that device. Until you enable it, employees in that Position will see an error that they don't have a Position when they try to clock in. |
- Click the Company name in the top right-hand corner.
- In the drop-down menu, click Company Setup.
- From the left-hand navigation bar, click Clock Settings.
- Scroll down to the Tablet Device section. Each registered device is listed with its Device ID and the name you gave it.
- Under Positions, click Edit next to the device you'd like to update.
- The Clock Positions page will open, listing every Position in your account.
- Check or uncheck the box(es) next to each Position that should be able to clock in and out on this device, and uncheck any that shouldn't.
- Once done, click Submit, and the page will refresh with a success message near the top!
📌 | Note: Your changes save as soon as you click Submit, so there's no need to go back to Clock Settings and click Update Clock Settings.
Setting Up Clock Photos & Facial Recognition
Next, decide whether you'd like employees to take a photo of themselves when they clock in and out. Clock photos help you confirm the right person is working and buddy-punching is not happening.
Clock photos require two things: the setting turned on in Clock Settings and camera access enabled on the device. If either one is missed, the camera won't appear when employees clock in. Facial recognition is an optional extra check on top of clock photos that is available on the Supreme plan.
| 📌 | Note: Clock photos are optional. If you don't plan to use them, you can skip this section. |
This section will guide you through the following:
- Turning On Clock Photos in Clock Settings
- Allowing Camera Access on the Device
- Flagging Photos That Fail Facial Recognition
Turning On Clock Photos in Clock Settings
- Click the Company name in the top right-hand corner.
- In the drop-down menu, click Company Setup.
- From the left-hand navigation bar, select Clock Settings.
- Scroll down to the Other Settings section.
- Check the box next to Allow employees to take photos of themselves during clock-in and clock-out.
- Once done, click Update Clock Settings, and employees will be prompted to provide a photo when they clock in and out!
📌 | Note: This setting applies to both the Push Time app and the Push Employee app.
Allowing Camera Access on the Device
The device running the Push Time app also needs to let the app use its camera. This is set in the device's own settings, not in PUSH.
For Android devices:
- Open the device's Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Push Time.
- Tap Permissions.
- Turn on Camera access.
For Apple devices:
- Open the device's Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Camera.
- Turn on the toggle next to Push Time, and the camera will appear the next time an employee clocks in!
📌 | Note: Menu names can vary by device model and operating system version. If you can't find these options, check your device manufacturer's help documentation.
Flagging Photos That Fail Facial Recognition
Facial recognition compares each clock photo to the employee's past photos. When this check is on, any clock entry where the photo doesn't match is marked as unapproved, so a manager can review it before payroll. This helps prevent one employee from clocking in for another.
📌 | Note: Facial recognition is available exclusively on the Supreme plan, and clock photos must be turned on for it to work. If you don't see facial recognition working, please reach out to our Support team, who can review your account settings.
To make sure mismatched clock photos get your attention, we also recommend turning on "Require approval when a clock photo fails facial recognition." This marks any clock entry where the photo doesn't match as unapproved, so it's flagged to you in Clock Approvals for review before payroll.
- Click the Company name in the top right-hand corner.
- In the drop-down menu, click Company Setup.
- On the left-hand navigation bar, click Clock Settings.
- Scroll down to the Require Manager Review/Approval section.
- Check the box next to Require approval when a clock photo fails facial recognition.
- Once done, click Update Clock Settings, and entries with mismatched photos will be flagged in Clock Approvals!
Unregistering a Device
Unregistering a device's Push Time app disconnects it from your account, so employees can no longer clock in on it. This is helpful when a device is replaced, lost, or no longer used for clocking in/out.
If the device is moving to another account or location, you don't need to unregister it first. Registering it to the new account automatically unregisters it from the previous one, so employees there will no longer be able to clock in on it.
📌 | Note: Devices can only be unregistered from Clock Settings in the web app, not from the Push Time app itself.
- Click the Company name in the top right-hand corner.
- In the drop-down menu, click Company Setup.
- From the left-hand navigation bar, select Clock Settings.
- Scroll down to the Tablet Device section.
- Find the device you'd like to remove, and clear its Device ID from the text box.
- Once done, click Update Clock Settings, and the device will be unregistered from your account!
Customizing Your Clock Settings
Once your device is set up, you can fine-tune how clock entries are handled. This includes what counts as on time, early or late, how breaks are captured, and what happens when an employee forgets to clock out. For every option, refer to our Managing Clock Settings article.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Push Time App
Have questions about setting up the Push Time app? Whether you're wondering how it differs from the Push Employee app, why a device isn't working, or who can make changes, this section provides quick answers to help you set up your devices with confidence.
Q: What's the difference between the Push Time app and the Push Employee app?
A: The Push Time app is strictly for clocking in and out, whereas the Push Employee app is the same app employees already use on their own phones to view their schedule, pay stubs and files, and communicate with others.
Q: Can we use both the Push Time app and the Push Employee app?
A: Yes. Some businesses have most employees clock in on a tablet in-store, while a few Positions, such as delivery drivers or field staff, clock in from their phones. Or some only allow the Push Time app to be used; this can be decided based on your business needs.
Q: Why can't anyone clock in on our device?
A: If no employee in any Position can clock in on a device, it most likely isn't registered yet. Refer to the Registering a Device section of this article.
Q: Why can't one employee clock in on a device when their coworkers can?
A: Their Position may not be enabled for that device. Refer to the Choosing Which Positions Can Clock In on a Device section of this article. If their Position is enabled, check that they have an active Position and a Clock ID on their profile. For all common causes, refer to Why Can't An Employee Clock In?
Q: We added a new Position. Do I need to update our devices?
A: Only if you're limiting which Positions can clock in on a device. If you aren't, new Positions automatically have access. If you're filtering which positions have access, enable the new Position on the device by following the Filtering Which Positions Can Access the Push Time App section of this article.
Q: We replaced our tablet. What do I need to do?
A: Unregister the old device, then download the Push Time app on the new device and register it. Refer to the Unregistering a Device and Registering a Device sections of this article.
Q: Can a device be registered to more than one account?
A: No. The Push Time app on a device can only be registered to one PUSH account at a time. If you register it to a new account, it's automatically unregistered from the previous one, so there's no need to unregister it first.
Q: Why doesn't the camera appear when employees clock in on the Push Time app?
A: Check both parts of the setup. Clock photos must be enabled in Clock Settings, and the device must allow the Push Time app to access its camera. Refer to the Setting Up Clock Photos & Facial Recognition section of this article.
Q: I'm a Team Administrator. Why can't I register a device?
A: Team Administrators need the Setup Clock Settings permission to register or unregister devices, or to change which Positions can clock in on them. If you are unable to access the Tablet Device section, please confirm your permissions with a Super Administrator.
Q: Can Push Support register a device for us?
A: No. PUSH Support can't register devices on your behalf, so a Super Administrator on your account will need to complete this step.
Q: Can employees take breaks on the Push Time app?
A: Yes. If your Breaks setting is set to Employees break in and out, employees can break in and out on the Push Time app during their shift. This is part of the Advanced Breaks feature, which is exclusive to the Supreme plan. For steps, refer to How To Break In/Out On The Push Time App.
Q: Can I stop unscheduled employees from clocking in on the Push Time app?
A: Yes. The Prevent clock-in when an employee is unscheduled setting blocks employees who aren't on the published schedule from clocking in. It applies to both the Push Time and Push Employee apps. For more details, refer to the Require Manager Review/Approval section of our Managing Clock Settings article.
