Question
- What does a Cost Center do?
Environment:
- Push Web App
Answer
Cost Centers are used by accountants, bookkeepers or individuals who deal with payroll. Cost Centers are a tool to help customize how payroll costs are grouped in your Journal Entry.
The most common usage of Cost Centers is in Journal Entry Reports. We recommend sorting Journal Entries by Position Cost Centers.
There are two types of Cost Centers.
- Employee Cost Center: is when you assign A Cost Center in an Employee Profile. In this set up, Employees can only have one Cost Center, even if they hold multiple positions.
- Position Cost Center: is when you assign the Cost Center to a specific Position from the Employee Positions page.
Additional Information
In cases that an employee has multiple Positions, we recommend using Position based Cost Centers as Push will track and assign information or hours worked by Position.
The Cost Center in the Employee Profile is treated as a Home Cost Center that is typically the primary Position worked. In cases, that the employee does not have insurable hours worked but needs to have Stat calculated, this is when Push would revert to the Home Cost Center.
On the Journal Entry settings, if the setting is "Position Cost Center", then it will allocate it based on the position they work. If the setting is Employee Cost Center, then it would only take the one in the profile.
Please note, only Super Administrators have permission to create a Cost Center in Push.
